My name is Susan Grant, and I’m the paint color specialist, interior decorator and e-designer behind Color Envy Design.
Busy parents and professionals hire me to implement an approachable strategy for their interior paint color selection and decorating projects. A way that’s consistent, current, convenient and cost effective.
I’m not your mother’s decorator!
My husband Rich and I spent years rebuilding our South Shore home one room at a time while raising our 2 boys and a few rescue dogs along the way.
I mean literally rebuilding. With our own four hands. Just the 2 of us. (and our kids and an occasional friend or family member!) From demolition to design and decor, we did everything ourselves. Over the course of 17 years, my CPA husband and I slowly and methodically executed ALL the demolition in every room of our home.
This was followed by us doing ALL the plumbing, soldering, electrical, sheetrock, lighting, floor, wall, tile and backsplash laying, grouting, cabinetry hanging, molding, mitering, spackling, sanding, taping, painting, (so much painting!), staining, appliance installation, full front yard landscaping and bricklaying ourselves. We even added a deck extension and built a stone sit-around outdoor fire pit ourselves. I will continue to add our "crazy adventures in home remodeling" pictures to the carousel below as I find them! (favorite is when I spilled an entire can of paint on myself 6 months pregnant with my second in 2003!)
When it was time to move, of course I staged the home myself and we sold it for 3x what we paid. The new owners even bought most of our furniture!
Too bad decorating shows weren’t that popular yet! We definitely could’ve had our own!
It was no surprise with all that experience and passion for well done interiors, I started getting hired by other homeowners for paint color consultations and interior styling.
After a long and very stressful move, we were finally in our dream home on the North Shore! No demolition necessary!
It was a crazy and hectic start of a new school year for my kids, starting high school in a new school district, boxes were in every room, and there was so much 1990s wallpaper and faux paint everywhere! Space planning, furniture sourcing and re-painting was slow even for me, a serial demolition diva, decorator, artist and painter. I was totally stressed out from the long move and busy unpacking 17 years worth of 4 people's stuff, after packing up 17 years worth of 4 people's stuff!
I didn't have the time I once had to devote to paint and decor selection for this 3 story home. Hubby's schedule was more hectic and he had limited time for sanding and repainting anything. I had to start this repainting and decorating project from scratch in a somewhat unfamiliar whole home, full of big empty rooms that were steeped in wallpaper, sponge paint and variety of fixed finishes I didn't choose (and wasn't changing) and I had almost no furniture and only small windows of time to design and complete projects. Even I, the demolition and decorating diva, was feeling slightly overwhelmed.
While pulling down wallpaper myself (see photo below!) I realized I needed a way to :
As an artist, serial decorator, home rebuilder and lifelong creative and problem solver, I was determined to figure out that way. I would create it if I had to. And I did.
That's when I set out to create and offer the kind of convenient and approachable color selection and decorating services and experience I wish I had at the time:
And that’s how Color Envy Design was born. I wanted to provide other busy parents and professionals just the right level of quick, convenient and accurate paint selection and decorating services I needed when I was too busy to do it all on my own. Somewhere between DIY and hiring a full service designer. That would be my niche.
Understanding “how paint color really worked” became my obsession. So I studied the science of color. I use consistent, repeatable, evidence based color data to specify, match, lighten, darken and tweak color. Using electronics and data conversion software, now I control color. Not the other way around! No more surprise colors on the wall! Combining technology with my years of interior color selection and background in art, I bring the best of both worlds together when I create color and decor palettes for clients.
I studied e-design, which is a way to virtually decorate a room using software to create digital renders and concept boards. This allows you to see how changes could look before you make costly design decisions and mistakes. Your couch doesn't look the way you thought it would with that new chair you've been eyeing?… DELETE and we’ll pick another one! This would allow me to collaborate with busy clients online and they could see color and decor concepts and make decisions from their own devices. I wouldn't even have to visit to discuss it if it wasn’t convenient for a client. It could be done entirely online.
And to let clients have control over the timeline of their own project, once they approve all the color and decor we've collaborated on, I would provide them with a clickable pdf shopping list with links to each item. They can click each item's picture, and order from any device, at their convenience.
With all my years of experience combined with today's cutting edge technology, I can conveniently provide my busy clients with a professionally selected and designed paint and decor framework for a whole room, whole floor or whole home that the client can execute at their own pace.
No more costly mistakes, no "stressing and guessing", no awkward paint color room transitions because you paint colored your way into a corner one room at a time, no "decor disconnected" rooms, no more not knowing what to do next or "piece meal" decorating!
This is the future of design. I call it “Luxury DIY”
All the luxury of a complete and professionally decorated space, executed by you at your pace.
